This one points out a lot of the major flaws of social work education. I have to say though, I don't really think the job market is all THAT bad for MSWs. Is it? Maybe I am just showin' my NYU privilege here.

I think the problem is that people think that a MSW should instantly lead to a job for them. What they don't realize, is that if they're still the people that occupy the same space of the person that struggled to get a job before.
ReplyDeleteI know that where I am, the "adequate" people didn't have too much of a problem getting a job, while the people that have always struggled, did.
I think universities (mine in particular) really make you think you WILL instantly get a job. I know NYU drilled in this idea that you'll get these internships and omg, these internships might even hire you, AND most students have job offers months before they graduate, and b.s. b.s b.s, etc. This is not the case based on what I'm seeing, though I don't think my friends graduating will be unemployed for long. It's just not the giant pool of jobs that my school marketed there'd be.
